Downtown Tahoe City (take Highway 28 west to get there)
Historic downtown Truckee (Highway 28 west, Highway 267 north)
The Village at Squaw Valley (Highway 28 to Tahoe City, go 4 miles north on Highway 89, turn left at the signs Squaw Valley – note the Olympic torch as you turn off Highway 89) http://www.squaw.com/winter/shopping

Virginia City – this historic western town is only 13 miles from where the Mount Rose Highway hits Highway 395 (go over Mount Rose Highway to Reno – the Mount Rose Highway becomes Highway 341, follow 341 into Virginia City).
